- Courtship behaviors of males include head-bobbing, extension and retraction of their large dewlap, and biting the nape of females.
- They feed mainly on leaves and fruit but they occasionally consume carrion and insects.
- They are important to the forest ecosystem because they disperse seeds for many trees and plants; they are also a food source for larger predators.
- Native to South and Central America, many feral populations have been introduced in the United States, particularly southern Florida.
